Choosing the right curtain rail for your windows

When choosing and installing a curtain rail, a number of factors need to be taken into account: the type and size of the window, the decorative style of the space into which it will be incorporated and the weight of the curtain. Depending on their design, structure and gliding system, some tracks can support sheer curtains or heavier fabrics.
This tutorial will help you choose the ideal curtain rail for your needs.

What parts make up a curtain rail?

The components of a curtain rail

Curtain rails allow curtains to be hung from hooks. A curtain rail is made up of an aluminium or PVC profile (1) containing a system of sliders (2) inside for easy opening and closing of the curtains.

The Gliders

The gliders, or rollers, allow the curtain to slide easily. The glider system of a curtain track is crucial not only for the smooth movement of the curtain, but also for supporting its weight.
In the curtain rails models we offer, nylon and metal gliders are available. Nylon gliders are suitable for most curtains, while metal gliders are designed for thick, very long or stage-type curtains.
Our default rails have a slider every 10 cm, except for the wave system.

Finials

The end caps finish and close the tracks on each side, while also providing a decorative function. Elegance and functionality come together in the decorative curtain rails we offer. Sophisticated metal end caps complete the overall look, for customised curtain solutions.

Brackets

Brackets are essential to the stability of the track and curtain assembly. Ceiling or wall brackets are available as options.example of an angle bracket and a decorative bracket
Wall brackets are divided into two main categories: simple angle and decorative brackets with a more refined design. length of Brack rod for curtain railsRight-angled brackets with plastic caps for our technical curtain rails.
An important detail of wall brackets is the length of the bracket rod, which will determine the distance between the track and the wall. At Absolute Deco, we offer a range of rod length options for our curtain rail brackets. Our brackets are easy and simple to install thanks to their "click" fixing system. The number of brackets required depends on the length of the track.

Types of Curtain Rails

Decorative rails
Decorative rails, with their refined design and shapes, embellish windows and add an extra aesthetic touch to interior spaces. They come in a wide variety of shapes and finishes.

Technical curtain rails

Curved curtain rails
Curved or angled curtain rails are perfect for windows on curved walls or corners. Absolute Deco offers all types of curves, including custom curves, in its collections QUATRO curtain rail and TECH 300KS curtain track.

Drive System

Motorised. The motorised curtain rails are practical because they are operated by remote control. In fact, motorised curtain rail systems integrated into home automation systems offer great flexibility and comfort, making it possible to control natural lighting, improve energy efficiency and ensure the security of spaces by simulating a presence. What's more, they can be programmed to adapt to occupants' routines and even controlled remotely via mobile applications, adding to the convenience and modernity of the home.

Opening Style

The type of opening you choose will depend on the style of the room, the size of the windows and the type of curtains you want.
L'side openingThe side opening, as its name suggests, allows the curtains to be moved horizontally, either to the left or to the right. The side opening generally uses a single curtain.
L'central openingMoving the curtains from the centre to the sides requires two curtains. These different options influence the aesthetics and functionality of the room.

Curtain Wave System

Wave curtain system diagramUnderstanding the curtain wave systemis essential, given how often it is used with curtain rails. The wave system is a modern, aesthetic solution for dressing up your windows. The wave system ensures perfect folds, whether the curtain is open or closed, giving it remarkable elegance.
The mechanism curtain wave system - the gliders are interconnected, creating a regular, even space between them, giving the curtain a wavy appearance. Our curtain rails allow you to customise the distance between the sliders, from 6 to 8 cm, to obtain a smaller or wider wave of the curtain.

Curtain rail installation

Curtain rail and window measurement diagramInstalling curtain rails can seem daunting, but by following a few simple steps, you can do it yourself. Whether you choose to install your rails on the wall, between two walls or on the ceiling, this guide will take you through the process.

1. Tools and materials:

Before you start, gather together the tools you'll need: a spirit level, a tape measure, a pencil, a drill, screws, plugs and a screwdriver.

How do I determine the correct size for a curtain rail?
To determine the correct size for a curtain rail, measure the width of the window and add 10 to 20% for sufficient space around the curtains, brackets and end caps. Calculation formula: (A) window width + 10 to 20% = (B) rail length.

2 Wall installation:

To install the rail on a wall, measure and mark the location of the brackets. Use a level to ensure that the fixing points are aligned. Drill holes for the wall plugs, insert them and then screw the brackets into place. Finally, slide the track into the brackets and hang your curtains.

3 Installation between two walls:

If you are installing the rails between two walls, carefully measure the distance between the walls. The rail should be slightly shorter than this distance to allow easy installation. Use wall brackets to stabilise the rail. Fix the brackets to each wall, making sure they are level, then insert the rail.

4.Ceiling installation:

For ceiling installation, start by determining the exact location where the track is to be fixed. This is particularly recommended for curtains that want to cover wide windows. Then mark the installation points for the brackets. Once the brackets have been installed, fix the track and hang your curtains.

5.Test:

Finally, be sure to test the curtains' opening and closing mechanism to ensure smooth movement. Enjoy your new home! By following these steps, installing curtain tracks will become child's play.
